5. X-Men: First Class (2011)
Explosions, mutant superpowers, and non-stop action make this a must-see superhero movie. For those of us who haven’t read the X-Men comics, X-Men: First Class gives you some of the back-story alluded to in the X-Men trilogy, awesome special effects and a soundtrack not to be sneezed at. Top it all off with a priceless Wolverine cameo, and you’ve got a cinematic superhero phenomenon that demands to be seen on a big screen.
4. Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man has arguably one of the best opening scenes of any superhero movie, and it sets the bar for the rest of the movie. Gunfights, explosions, and epic hand-to-hand combat between Iron Man and Iron Monger (Obadiah Stane), set to some rock-your-socks music (ACDC, anyone?) make this a must-see in your home theater.
3. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
A refreshing re-make of the Toby McGuire monstrosity from the early 2000’s, this Spider-Man brings the action, comedy, and romance without all the angst. While not filled with the explosions of X-Men and Iron Man, The Amazing Spider-Man more than makes up for it with web-slinging flights through Manhattan. These scenes are so well done, you’ll feel like you’re flying through the city alongside Spider-Man. It just wouldn’t be right to experience this on anything less than a big screen.
2. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Batman vs. Bane, escaped convicts wreaking havoc, explosions, the sweet rides (take your pick: Batmobile, Bat-Pod, or The Bat helicopter), and a glorious soundtrack combine for a mind-blowing movie masterpiece. The whole Batman trilogy is amazing, and really, all three deserve a spot on this list, but the third movie has more action and even better gear than the first two, and while Heath Ledger’s Joker is the best Batman villain ever, The Dark Knight Rises is a lighter movie, with some much-needed comic relief. Bottom line: you can’t have a home theater system and not watch The Dark Knight Rises.
1. The Avengers (2012)
What’s better than Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and The Hulk? All four combined. The Avengers has everything you love about each of them, and then some. Loki is the perfect supervillain, especially when teamed up with demonic aliens, and The Hulk is absolutely at his best, in all his building-smashing glory. Incredible hand-to-hand combat, Iron Man flight scenes, and all the explosions you could wish for make The Avengers the number one superhero movie to watch in your home theater.
